Documents Required for Foreigner to Drive in Japan

Driver's License

If you are visiting Japan, you must have either the International Driving Permit (IDP) under the 1949 Geneva Convention or the official Japanese translation of your license, accompanied with your Original Driving License.

📄 International Driving Permit (IDP)

  • Must be issued under the Geneva Convention of 1949.
  • If you would like to confirm whether your IDP is the correct valid version, please refer to this website.

📝 Certified Japanese Translation

  • Whether you need an IDP or a Certified Translation depends on your country.
  • If your country is not part of the Geneva Convention and has a Driving License recognition with Japan, you can apply for a translation here.
Important: Japan only recognizes the Geneva Convention of 1949 concerning IDPs. List of the Geneva Convention member countries

Driving documents depend on your resident-registration status, date of entry, licence-issuing country or region, and the validity of your documents. Please check the official requirements before booking.

Note

Japan follows strict traffic laws and driving on the left side of the road may need some adaptation time. Please drive carefully, wear the seat belt at all times and obey speed limits.
