Traffic Violations and Driver Responsibilities in Japan

Japan strictly enforces its traffic laws. Traffic violations may result in penalties, administrative action or other legal consequences depending on the nature and severity of the violation.

All traffic violations committed during the rental period are the responsibility of the renter and the driver.

  1. Speeding

Always follow the speed limits shown on road signs and road markings.

Speeding is enforced through police patrols, roadside enforcement and automated speed-detection systems. These systems may record the vehicle and driver for subsequent investigation and enforcement.

Do not assume that driving slightly above the posted limit is permitted.

  1. Mobile Phones and Navigation Systems

Do not hold, operate or look at a mobile phone while driving.

Avoid becoming distracted by the vehicle’s navigation system or other electronic devices. If you need to use your phone or adjust the navigation system, stop the vehicle in a safe and legal location first.

  1. Parking Violations

Park only in designated parking spaces, such as coin-operated parking lots or other authorized parking facilities.

Do not leave the vehicle on the street unless parking is expressly permitted. If you receive a parking violation notice, do not ignore or remove it. Follow the instructions of the police and contact OnlyJDM immediately.

Any required procedures and payments must be completed by the renter in accordance with the instructions of the police and OnlyJDM.

  1. Seat Belts and Child Seats

The driver and all passengers must wear seat belts.

Children under six years old must be properly secured in an appropriate child safety seat. Please reserve a child seat in advance and contact us with the child’s age and weight so that we can confirm vehicle compatibility.

  1. Drinking and Driving

Never drive after consuming alcohol.

Alcohol may remain in your system the following morning, even if you no longer feel intoxicated. If there is any possibility that alcohol remains in your system, do not drive.

  1. Renter’s Responsibility

The renter is responsible for all traffic violations, parking violations, tolls, penalties and related charges incurred during the rental period.

If you are stopped by the police, receive a violation notice or become involved in any traffic-related incident, follow the instructions of the police and notify OnlyJDM immediately.

Failure to report or properly resolve a violation may result in additional charges, retention of the security deposit and refusal of future rentals.
