Winter JDM Driving from Tokyo: Plan Your Japan Ski Trip
Combine your love of Japanese cars with a winter ski trip from Tokyo. Explore Kagura, Naeba, GALA Yuzawa, Hakuba and Karuizawa, with approximate driving distances and advice on OnlyJDM winter tyres, ETC card rental and Apple CarPlay availability on selected cars.
As Tokyo cools down in October, it is time to start planning your winter escape.
For travellers who love Japanese cars as much as skiing, a winter trip can bring both interests together: collect a JDM car in Tokyo, head towards the mountains, and combine time on the slopes with local food and an overnight onsen stay.
OnlyJDM offers a winter tyre service, with Apple CarPlay available on selected cars and ETC cards available to rent. Before booking, tell us your dates and destination so we can confirm suitable vehicles, equipment and rental conditions.
Where can you drive from Tokyo for a ski trip?
These are broad, one-way planning estimates from central Tokyo, not live navigation results. Your pickup location, route, stops, traffic and snowfall will affect the journey. Allow additional time in winter.
| Destination | Approximate distance | Approximate driving time | Suggested trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kagura Ski Resort | 200–240 km | 3–4 hours | Skiing with an overnight stay around Yuzawa |
| Naeba Ski Resort | 200–230 km | 3–4 hours | An overnight ski break |
| GALA Yuzawa | 200–230 km | 3–4 hours | Skiing and exploring the Yuzawa area |
| Hakuba Valley | 280–330 km | 4.5–6 hours | Two or three nights, or longer |
| Karuizawa Prince Hotel Ski Resort | 170–200 km | 2.5–3.5 hours | Skiing, shopping and an overnight stay |
Driving from Tokyo to Kagura Ski Resort
When planning a Kagura ski trip, choose your arrival point carefully. The resort has two main access points: Mitsumata Station and Tashiro Station.
Check which entrance is appropriate for your plans and the day's operations, then navigate to the correct parking area and ropeway station.
Our suggested itinerary is an overnight stay around Yuzawa, leaving time for dinner and an onsen after skiing.

Driving from Tokyo to Naeba Ski Resort
Naeba is another option for a ski holiday with an overnight stay.
For a trip combining JDM driving and skiing, we suggest allowing enough time for each. Arriving in the area before your main ski day can make the schedule more relaxed and avoid a long return drive immediately after a full day on the slopes.

GALA Yuzawa: skiing and exploring the surrounding area
GALA Yuzawa has direct Shinkansen station access, making rail travel a convenient option. Driving becomes worth considering when your plans also include accommodation, meals or other stops around Yuzawa.
For the 2026–2027 winter season, GALA has announced that its South Area will remain closed. Check current lift and slope operations before purchasing tickets.
Tokyo to Hakuba: plan a longer winter stay
Hakuba Valley is a destination with multiple ski resorts, rather than a single ski area.
We suggest at least two or three nights for a driving trip from Tokyo. A longer stay gives you more breathing room around the journey and time to enjoy local accommodation and dining.
Choose your actual resort, hotel and parking location before planning the route, as the final approach will vary.

Karuizawa: combine skiing with shopping and dining
Karuizawa Prince Hotel Ski Resort is an option for a mixed itinerary, particularly when not everyone in your group wants to ski every day.
You can plan skiing alongside nearby shopping, dining and accommodation. It is closer to Tokyo than some alternatives, but winter roads can still be snowy or icy.

Other destinations to compare include Kawaba Ski Resort and Tambara Ski Park in Gunma.
What should you confirm before renting a JDM car for skiing?
Winter tyres
OnlyJDM offers a winter tyre service. Send us your dates, destination and preferred car before booking so we can confirm availability, suitability and pricing.
Ground clearance, drivetrain and luggage space vary between JDM models. Winter tyres also do not remove the need to comply with chain restrictions. If chains may be required, confirm vehicle compatibility and rental conditions in advance.
Apple CarPlay on selected cars
Some cars feature Apple CarPlay for navigation and music with a compatible phone.
If CarPlay is essential for your trip, email us to confirm the specific car and connection method. Downloading offline maps is also useful for mountain travel.
ETC card rental
Trips from Tokyo to these ski destinations commonly involve expressways. Ask about ETC card rental when arranging your booking.
The card rental charge and expressway tolls are separate costs. Confirm the charges and settlement process; renting a card does not include unlimited or free tolls.
Plan for ski equipment, luggage and pickup times
A car's seat count does not tell you how many ski bags and suitcases it can carry. Let us know your passenger count, luggage and whether you are bringing skis or a snowboard.
Renting equipment at the resort may be an alternative if space is limited.
Check your included mileage and any excess-distance charges, too. If you want an early start at the slopes, consider collecting the car during opening hours the previous day and arranging overnight parking.
Add a JDM experience to your winter holiday
Would you choose Kagura, Naeba or a longer stay in Hakuba?
Email us your travel dates, destinations, passenger count, luggage and preferred car. Please mention whether you need winter tyres, an ETC card and Apple CarPlay, so we can confirm the available options.
Before travelling, check official resort updates, weather and road restrictions. Adjust your plans if conditions are unsuitable. If you are unfamiliar with driving on snow, consider public transport or a resort shuttle for skiing and enjoy your JDM rental on a separate route with suitable conditions.
