Driving in Japan

Driver's License: If you are visiting Japan, you must have either an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a Certified Japanese

Translation, accompanied with your Original Driving License.

Whether you need an IDP or a Certified Translation depends on your country.

Important: Japan only recognizes the Geneva Convention of 1949 concerning IDPs.

If your country is not part of the Geneva Convention and has a Driving License recognition with japan,  you can apply for a translation here.

If you are a resident of Japan, a Japanese Driving License is required.

Note: Japan follows strict traffic laws and driving on the left side of the road may need some adaptation time. Please drive carefully, wear seat belts at all times and adhering to speed limits.
